They play an important role in free probability theory (especially with regard to free entropy), and the are central to U. Haagerup\u2019s recent progress toward the invariant subspace conjecture. In this talk, I will discuss recent joint work with U. Haagerup and R. Speicher on the resolvent <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em> of any <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em>-diagonal operator <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em>. It turns out the norm of the resolvent blows up near the spectral radius with a universal power law (of exponent <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em>), and the constant depends only on the <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em>th moment of <em>TeX Embedding failed&nbsp;!<\/em>.
