Titre A modern perspective on W-algebras

Résume

Vertex algebras originate from the attempt of a rigorous formalism for two dimensional conformal field theory. The most basic vertex algebras are associated to affine Lie (super)algebras and a more general class, the W-algebras,  is obtained from them via a procedure that is called quantum Hamiltonian reduction. I will start with an overview/historical introduction of the subject.
Then I will explain a modern perspective, that views classes of W-algebras as special cases (subquotients) of certain universal structures. This gives in particular a quite novel perspective on the representation theory.
My talk is based on a research program with Andrew Linshaw.
