In this talk, we will define key polynomials and explore their relationship with the defect of a valued field extension. We will present a formula for the defect in terms of Mac Lane-Vaquié chains and then reformulate it in terms of Spivakovsky's limit key polynomials. In addition, we will observe a connection between defectless fields and finite complete sequences of key polynomials.
