In this talk, I will explain a proof of Crawley-Boevey's conjecture on the Deligne-Simpson problem. The first half will review some earlier results, notably the construction of multiplicative quiver varieties and their properties. In the second half, I will focus on the difficulties in proving this conjecture, and explain how they may be overcome by bringing in the nonabelian Hodge theory.
