The unipotent fundamental group of a variety over a number field produces a tower of obstructions to an adelic point being global. In this talk I will explain how these obstructions can be described explicitly, and give some applications. This involves a combination of joint work with Alex Betts, Carl Wang-Erickson and Jan Vonk.
