We shall report on some recent on-going joint work withJ. Coates, T. Fukaya and K. Kato. The main results revolve around therole played by root numbers of certain self-dual Artin representationsassociated to certain non-commutative $p$-adic Lie extensions. It was inspiredby work of T.Dokchitser and V. Dokchitser, and M. Shuter. It is related torecent joint work of H. Darmon and Y. Tian, and also to work of D. Rohrlich.
