Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a totally real number field F. The conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer predicts that theMordell-Weil rank of E grows systematically in certain towers of fieldextensions of F. In this talk, I will discuss generalizations of theStark-Heegner point construction of Darmon which should explain thisrank growth in many cases.
