We study preperiodic points of polarized algebraic dynamicalsystems using canonical heights. In particular, we prove the rigidityof the set of preperiodic points. The proof uses equidistribution ofsmall points and a non-archimedean analogue of the Calabi--Yautheorem. It is joint work with Shou-wu Zhang.
