Résume

The science of waters had a very long tradition in Italy, whose origins can be traced back to the works by Galileo and his school, such as Benedetto Castelli, Della misura dell’acque correnti (1628), Evangelista Torricelli, Opera geometrica (1644), Famiano Michelini, Della direzione dei fiumi (1664) and Domenico Guglielmini, Della natura dei fiumi (1697). Many attempts had been done in order to give a theoretical foundation to this discipline and many mathematicians had been involved in this discipline.  The relevance of such studies in Italy is well documented by the publication of five editions of the collection on the motion of waters. These works collect the main contributions of Italian mathematicians to the collections on the motion of water that were published in Italy between the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century in Florence (1723; 1765-1774), Parma (1766-1768) and Bologna (1821-1826; 1823-1845). In my talk I will focus on the three eighteenth century editions of the collections on the motion of waters and I will give an overview of their reception inside and outside Italian boundaries.
