I will report on an on going project with Mark de Cataldo, Andres Fernandes Herrero and Roberto Fringuelli on the moduli space of semistable meromorphic G-Higgs bundles over a smooth curve. For any given degree in the algebraic fundamental group of the reductive group G, we exhibit a uniform description of the decomposition theorem for the Hitchin fibration.
