+ Florin Radulescu Automorphic forms design of free group factors and quantum dynamics 21/03/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
The role of automorphic forms as intertwiners between various representations of free group factors was discovered a long time ago by Vaughan Jones, starting with a remarkable formula relating Peterson scalar product with the intrinsical trace. The intertwiner associated to an automorphic form is an eclectic object, not much can be computed, but the Muray von Neuman dimension can be used to get hints on its image. Vaughan Jones used that to settle the problem of finding analytic functions vanishing on the orbit under the modular group of a point in the upper half plane.  In past work of the speaker, it was put in evidence that this is related to equivariant Berezin quantization.
This leads to a different representation of free group factors and to the existence of a quantum dynamics whose associated  unbounded  Hochschild 2- cocycle is related to the isomorphism problem. I will explain some concrete formulae and some new  interpretation of the associated quantum dynamics

+ Oussama Bensaid Coarse separation and the geometry of amalgamated free products and and wreath products 07/03/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
A subset S of a metric space X is coarsely separating if there exists a constant D such that for any R, at least two connected components of the complement of the D-neighborhood of S contain balls of radius R. We are interested in the following questions: Can we coarsely separate a connected nilpotent Lie group of growth degree d by a subspace of growth degree d-2? Which spaces of exponential growth do not admit a separating subset of subexponential  growth? We start by describing how this separation property arises naturally when dealing with the large-scale geometry of amalgamated free products and wreath products. Then we answer the first question in the negative, and give examples of spaces answering the second question, namely all symmetric spaces of non-compact type (except the real hyperbolic plane), higher rank thick Euclidean buildings, and some SOL type geometries. This is a joint work with Anthony Genevois and Romain Tessera.

+ Waltraud Lederle Boomerang subgroups 22/02/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

Given a locally compact group, its set of closed subgroups can be endowed with a compact, Hausdorff topology. With this topology, it is called the Chabauty space of the group. Every group acts on its Chabauty space via conjugation. This action has connections to rigidity theory, Margulis' normal subgroup theorem and measure preserving actions of the group via so-called Invariant Random Subgroups (IRS). I will give a gentle introduction into Chabauty spaces, IRS and mention a few classical results. I will explain how in recent work with Yair Glasner we get deterministic versions of some of the results via a new concept called boomerang subgroup.

+ Stefaan Vaes Ergodic states on type III_1 factors and ergodic actions 15/02/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

I will report on a joint work with Amine Marrakchi. Since the early days of Tomita-Takesaki theory, it is known that a von Neumann algebra that admits a state with trivial centralizer must be a type III_1 factor, but the converse remained open. I will present a solution of this problem, proving that such ergodic states form a dense G_\delta set among all normal states on any III_1 factor with separable predual. Through Connes' Radon-Nikodym cocycle theorem, this problem is related to the existence of ergodic cocycle perturbations for outer group actions, which I will discuss in the second half of the talk.

+ Romain Tessera Large-scale geometry of Lamplighter-like groups 08/02/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

The classification of certain families of groups up to quasi-isometry has been the object of an intensive study in the last 30 years, culminating with the classification of lattices in Lie groups, and mapping class groups.

The case of amenable, and more specifically solvable groups appears to be much harder, and has known very few developments in comparison. Until recently, only lamplighters over Z, Baumslag-Solitar groups, and very specific polycyclic groups had been treated. With Anthony Genevois, we introduce new tools to study the large scale geometry of certain families of groups obtained as a semi-direct product of a locally finite group with an arbitrary group H: for instance Lamplighter groups (wreath product of H with a finite group), or Lampshuffler groups (semi-direct product of H with permutations finitely supported on H), and other similar constructions.
We prove that if H is one-ended and finitely presented, then any quasi-isometry between any two such groups must preserve the semi-direct product structure in a very strong sense. This yields a complete classification in the case of lamplighters, which partially extend to more general classes.

+ André Belotto da Silva Sard Conjecture in analytic manifolds 25/01/2024 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

I will present some recent results concerning the Sard Conjecture in Sub-Riemannian geometry (SR geometry). SR geometry studies the trajectories in a manifold M which satisfies an extra constraint: they must be almost everywhere tangent to a totally non-holonomic distribution D over M. Some of these trajectories, which are called singular, have pathological behaviours which have no analog in Riemannian geometry. The Sard Conjecture states that the set of points one can reach via singular horizontal paths is "small", that is, it has Lebesgue measure zero.
I will explain how this Conjecture can be interpreted as a geometrical problem concerning the behavior of a characteristic singular foliation in the cotangent bundle. Under the hypothesis of analyticity of M and D, we can study this singular foliation via methods of singularity theory, subanalytic geometry and control measure theory. This is the approach used in our recent results in collaboration with Parusinki, Figalli and Rifford.

+ Haluk Şengün Local theta correspondence via C*-algebras of groups 07/12/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

Theta correspondence is a major theme in the theory of automorphic forms and in representation theory. The local version of the correspondence sets up a bijection between certain subsets of admissible duals of suitable pairs of reductive groups. There are two special cases in which the correspondence is known to enjoy extra features, the ‘equal rank’ case where temperedness is preserved and the ‘stable range’ case where unitarity is preserved.

In joint work with Bram Mesland (Leiden), we show that in these special cases, the local theta correspondence is actually given by a Morita equivalence of certain C*-algebras. There are interesting applications and some global questions that follow this result. Time permitting, I will discuss some of these.

+ Pieter Spaas Hyperfiniteness for group actions on trees 23/11/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

We study actions of a countable group on a countable tree, and the orbit equivalence relation of the induced action on the Gromov boundary. We will identify a natural condition which implies that this equivalence relation is hyperfinite, and discuss some examples. We also identify a natural weakening of the aforementioned condition which implies measure hyperfiniteness of the boundary action. Finally, we document some examples of group actions on trees whose boundary action is not hyperfinite. This is based on joint work with Srivatsav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, Koichi Oyakawa, and Forte Shinko.

+ Andrei Alpeev Strong Ulam stability and amenability 16/11/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
A group is called strongly Ulam-stable if near an almost representation on a Hilbert space (meaning that the homomorphism equality holds up to some error in the norm) there is a close actual unitary representation. Kazhan showed that all amenable groups are strongly Ulam-stable. In the onter direction the best known result, by Burger, Ozawa and Thow, was that every group containing a non-abelian free group is nos strongly Ulam-stable. I will show that lamplighters over non-amenable groups are not strongly Uam-stable.

+ Ali Raad Cartan Subalgebras in AH-algebras: existence, uniqueness, and groupoid models 12/10/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

There has been a growing interest in the study of Cartan subalgebras of C*-algebras as they have been found to link C*-algebras to topological dynamics as well as geometric group theory. Remarkable links have also been made to the classification programme for C*-algebras. In this talk I will discuss some recent results on how to construct Cartan subalgebras in various classes of AH-algebras. I will discuss their groupoid models and some uniqueness results. Part of my talk will be based on joint work with Xin Li.

+ Mario Klisse Crossed products as compact quantum metric spaces 05/10/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

In 2013 Hawkins, Skalski, White and Zacharias constructed and investigated spectral triples on crossed product C*-algebras by actions of discrete groups which are in a natural sense equicontinuous. Following Connes, one of the ingedients of their construction are certain multiplication operators associated with length functions on the group. In their article they further formulated the question for whether their triples turn the corresponding crossed product C*-algebras into compact quantum metric spaces. The aim of this talk is to give a gentle introduction into Rieffel's theory of compact quantum metric spaces. By combining his ideas on horofunction boundaries of groups with results from metric geometry, I will further answer the question of Hawkins, Skalski, White and Zacharias in the affirmative in the case of virtually abelian groups, equipped with suitable length functions.

+ Claudio Llosa Dehn functions of central products of nilpotent groups 14/09/2023 14:00 RH02B Buffon

The Dehn function of a finitely presented group provides a quantitative measure for the difficulty of detecting if a word in its generators represents the trivial element of the group. By work of Gersten, Holt and Riley the Dehn function of a nilpotent group of class c is bounded above by n^{c+1}. However, we are still far from determining the precise Dehn functions of all nilpotent groups. Since Dehn functions are quasi-isometry invariants, progress on this problem may lead to insights to the quasi-isometry classification of nilpotent groups. I will explain recent results that allow us to determine the precise Dehn functions of many nilpotent groups arising as central products. I will also present some consequences of these results, such as the existence of a pair of finitely presented groups with the same asymptotic cone, but with different Dehn functions. This talk is based on joint works with Pallier and Tessera, and with García-Mejía and Pallier.

+ Sorin Popa Some remarks on the free group factors 14/09/2023 11:00 238A Condorcet

The structure and classification of the so-called  free group II1 factors, arising as vN-algebras of the free groups Fn with n generators, 2 ≤ n ≤ ∞, have been the subject of much interest for 80 years by now. But despite many remarkable results and the development of several insightful techniques, some of the most basic questions concerning this fundamental class of II1 factors remained open:

(1) LFn ≃ LFm iff n = m;
(2) F(LFn)=1 when n < ∞;
(3) infinite generation of LF∞;
(4) existence of non freely complemented maximal amenable MASAs in LFn;
(5) do LFn embed in any non-amenable II1 factor.

I will comment on the progress made on these problems and possible approaches to solve them.
+ Jean-Christophe Bourin Matrix inequalities and matrix decompositions 29/06/2023 14:00 RH02B Buffon
We will survey some classical inequalities and more recent results involving unitary orbits and partitioned matrices.
This talk  does not require any specialized background and should be accessible to a large audience.

+ Tom Ferragut Geometry and rigidity of quasi-isometries of horospherical products 15/06/2023 14:00 RH02B Buffon

Horospherical products of two Gromov hyperbolic spaces where introduced to unify the construction of metric spaces such as Diestel-Leader graphs, the Sol geometry or treebolic spaces. In this talk we will first recall all the bases required to construct these horospherical products, then we will study their large scale geometry through a description of their geodesics and visual boundary. Afterwards we will get interested in a geometric rigidity property of their quasi-isometries. This result will lead to a new quasi-isometry classification for a family of non-hyperbolic solvable Lie groups.

+ Sam Mellick Higher rank groups have fixed price one 01/06/2023 14:00 RH02B Buffon

In this talk I will give a sketch of the proof of the result in the title. In particular, we show that every essentially free probability measure preserving action of a higher rank semisimple Lie group has cost one. This implies every lattice in such a group has cost one, as well as resolving a conjecture of Abert, Gelander, and Nikolov on the vanishing of rank gradient for sequences of lattices in higher rank simple Lie groups. It thus also proves state-of-the-art vanishing results for mod-p homology growth. No prior familiarity with cost for locally compact groups or knowledge of Lie theory will be assumed. Joint work with Mikolaj Fraczyk and Amanda Wilkens.

+ Alain Valette Maximal Haagerup subgroups in $\Z^2\rtimes GL_2(\Z)$ (after Jiang and Skalski) 25/05/2023 14:00 RH02B Buffon

The Haagerup property (a.k.a. a-(T)-menability) is a weak form of amenability. In a countable group, every Haagerup subgroup is contained in a maximal Haagerup subgroup, by Zorn's lemma. The study of maximal Haagerup subgroups of a given group was initiated in 2021 by Y. Jiang and A. Skalski, who classified maximal Haagerup subgroups in $\Z^2\rtimes GL_2(\Z)$. By simplifying the original proof we are able to extend it to more general semi-direct products.

+ Konrad Wrobel Measure equivalence and wreath products 11/05/2023 14:00 RH02A Buffon
Measure equivalence is an equivalence relation on the space of groups that was defined by Gromov in the 90's as an analytic analogue of quasi-isometry. Let F be a nonabelian free group. We show that if $L_1$ and $L_2$ are measure equivalent groups, then the wreath products $L_1\wr F$ and $L_2\wr F$ are measure equivalent with index 1. This is joint work with Robin Tucker-Drob.

Paoli.

+ Juan Paucar Quantitative measured subgroups for locally compact groups 13/04/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
Quantitative Measured Subgroups have been introduced by Tessera, Le Maître, Delabie and Koivisto  as a quantitative asymmetric analogue of Measure Equivalence for discrete groups. In this talk, I will introduce the same notion for locally compact compactly generated unimodular groups, proving the monotonicity of the isoperimetric profile in the locally compact case as well as the existence of a quantitative measured subgroup coupling from a regular embedding between locally compact groups (this is a measured analogue of coarse embedding between groups). As a consequence of this, I will finish by proving the monotonicity of the isoperimetric profile for regular embeddings between locally compact compactly generated unimodular groups.

+ Arthur Troupel Free wreath products as fundamental graph C*-algebras 09/02/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

The free wreath product of a compact quantum group by the quantum permutation group S_N^+ has been introduced by Bichon in order to give a quantum counterpart of the classical wreath product. The representation theory of such groups is well-known, but some results about their operator algebras were still open, for example Haagerup property, K-amenability or factoriality of the von Neumann algebra. I will present a joint work with Pierre Fima in which we identify these algebras with the fundamental C*-algebras of certain graphs of C*-algebras, and we deduce these properties from these constructions.

+ Christoforos Panagiotis Gap at 1 for the percolation threshold of Cayley graphs 02/02/2023 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
Bernoulli percolation consists in erasing independently each edge of a graph G with some probability 1-p and studying the connected components (called clusters) of this random graph. Of interest is the parameter p_c above which infinite clusters exist. We prove that the set of possible values for the percolation threshold p_c of Cayley graphs has a gap at 1 in the sense that there exists ε>0 such that for every Cayley graph G one either has p_c(G)=1 or p_c(G)≤1−ε. The proof builds on the new approach of Duminil-Copin, Goswami, Raoufi, Severo & Yadin to the existence of phase transition using the Gaussian free field, combined with the finitary version of Gromov's theorem on the structure of groups of polynomial growth of Breuillard, Green & Tao.

+ Ilijas Farah Wassermann’s C*-algebra and Kazhdan’s property (T) 12/01/2023 14:00
Using a group with Kazhdan’s property (T), in 1991 S. Wassermann constructed a separable C*-algebra A whose Ext is not a group. I will show that there is a unital embedding of A into the Calkin algebra such that the relative commutant of its range does not even include a unital copy of a simple, nonabelian C*-algebra (a moment of though shows that this implies Ext(A) is not a group).
The motivation for this result comes from the (widely open) question whether the Calkin algebra has a K-theory reversing automorphism. It implies that the Calkin algebra is not isomorphic to the corona of the stabilization of the Cuntz algebra O_\infty, with which it shares many properties (both algebras are purely infinite and simple, satisfy the double commutant theorem for separable unital subalgebras, have the same K-theory, and similarly behaved Ext functors).

The proof does not involve logic at all.

+ Federico Vigolo On coarse homomophisms and their kernels 15/12/2022 14:00 1013

This talk is an introduction to coarse homomorphisms. Morally, a coarse homomorphism (or quasimorphism) between two groups is a function that sends the product of any two elements within uniformly bounded distance from the product of their images. The study of quasimorphisms from a group G to the real numbers is a relatively classical topic, that has connection with (stable) commutator length and bounded cohomology on groups. The aim of this talk is to show that by considering coarse homomorphisms with more general target groups naturally lead us to the notions of coarse groups and subgroups. Throughout the talk, special emphasis will be given to the coarse homomorphisms with target on a Banach space.

+ Eduardo Alejandro Silva Müller Dead ends on wreath products and lamplighter groups 08/12/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

A finitely generated group G has unbounded depth with respect to a finite generating set S if for any n≥1, there exists g in G such that no element of the form gh, with h of word length at most n, has larger word length than g. In other words, g locally maximizes the word length in its n-neighborhood. The existence of infinite groups with unbounded depth is not evident, and the first example of such a group was provided by Cleary and Taback, who showed that the lamplighter group Z/2Z wr Z has unbounded depth for a standard generating set.

In this talk we will concentrate on the case where G=A wr B is the wreath product of two groups. An essential tool for us is the description of geodesics on A wr B in terms of the solutions to the Traveling Salesman Problem on B, due to Parry. We prove that for any finite group A and any finitely generated group B, the group A wr B admits a standard generating set with unbounded depth, and that if B is abelian then the above is true for every standard generating set. When B = H * K is the free product of two finite groups H and K, we characterize which standard generators of the associated wreath product have unbounded depth in terms of a geometrical constant related to the Cayley graphs of H and K. In particular, our result shows a difference with the one-dimensional case: the lamplighter group over the free product of two sufficiently large finite cyclic groups does not have unbounded depth with respect to some standard generating set.

+ Tey Berendschot Phase transitions for nonsingular Bernoulli actions 17/11/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
Given a nonsingular Bernoulli action, we construct a one-parameter family of nonsingular Bernoulli actions, indexed by t in [0,1]. For t=1 we retrieve the nonsingular Bernoulli action we started with, and for t=0 we obtain a measure preserving Bernoulli action. In this setting we prove the existence of a phase transition for (strong) ergodicity. When the nonsingular Bernoulli action arises from a group acting on a locally finite tree, we are able to compute the precise phase transition value.

+ Walter van Suijlekom Noncommutative spaces at finite resolution 27/10/2022 11:00 1016 Sophie Germain

We extend the traditional framework of noncommutative geometry in order to deal with two types of approximation of metric spaces. On the one hand, we consider spectral truncations of geometric spaces, while on the other hand, we consider metric spaces up to a finite resolution. In our approach the traditional role played by C*-algebras is taken over by so-called operator systems. We consider C*-envelopes and introduce a propagation number for operator systems, which we show to be an invariant under stable equivalence and use it to compare approximations of the same space. We illustrate our methods for concrete examples obtained by spectral truncations of the circle, and of metric spaces up to finite resolution.

+ Fatemeh Khosravi Dixmier's problem and similarity property for locally compact quantum groups 13/10/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

A locally compact group G has the similarity property if every uniformly bounded representation is similar to a unitary representation. A well-known result of Dixmier states that all amenable groups have the similarity property. Moreover, he asked whether this property is equivalent to amenability. In this talk, I will review the history and all the known results about the similarity property and Dixmier's problem for locally compact groups and locally compact quantum groups. I will show that the similarity property holds for all dual quantum groups of QSIN quantum groups which covers all the known results. This talk is based on joint work with Sang-Gyun Youn.

+ Anthony Genevois Groupes modulaires asymptotiquement rigides 22/09/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

+ Patrick Nairne QI embeddings of Baumslag-Solitar groups 02/06/2022 17:00 1013 Sophie Germain

Problems of quasiisometric rigidity in geometric group theory ask the following: If finitely generated groups G and H are quasiisometric (i.e. they are metrically similar) then do they have to be algebraically similar (e.g. commensurable)?

In this talk we will study the above question, but under the weaker assumption that there only exists a quasiisometric embedding of G into H. We will answer it in the case when G and H are solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, generalising work of Farb and Mosher. The problem reduces to understanding embeddings between regular rooted trees which in turn reduces to understanding the properties of an interesting and novel integer sequence.

+ Alice Giraud Classification of measure-preserving actions of Invariant random subgroups and model theory (soutenance de thèse) 12/05/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

+ Amaury Freslon Permutations quantiques aléatoires 21/04/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

+ Claudio Llosa Finiteness properties of subgroups of hyperbolic groups 14/04/2022 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain

Hyperbolic groups form an important class of finitely presented groups. They are known to be of type Fn for all n, that is, they admit a classifying space with finitely many cells in all dimensions. It is natural to ask if subgroups of hyperbolic groups inherit these strong finiteness properties: For n >= 1, is there a subgroup of a hyperbolic group of type Fn, but not of type Fn+1? Brady raised this question in 1999 following his construction of examples for n=2, while the first examples for n=1 were constructed by Rips in 1982. The case n >= 3 remained open since. Here we will explain recent progress on Brady's question for n >= 3. This talk is based on joint works with Pierre Py, and with Bruno Martelli and Pierre Py.

+ Lise Wouters Equivariant Z-stability in the Bauer simplex case 31/03/2022 14:00 1013
An action of a countable group on a C* -algebra is called equivariantly Z-stable if it tensorially absorbs the trivial action on the Jiang-Su algebra. Analogous to ordinary Z-stability, equivariant Z-stability is an important regularity property in the context of the classification of amenable group actions on classifiable C* -algebras. In this talk I will explain the relevance and nature of this property and discuss for which actions positive results were already obtained establishing the property. In particular, I will present my own recent result: I have proved that the property holds automatically for all automorphisms on algebraically simple, separable, nuclear, Z-stable C* -algebras for which the trace space is a Bauer simplex with finite-dimensional extremal boundary. At least for automorphisms this is a generalization of a previous result by Gardella-Hirshberg-Vaccaro.
+ Marek Kaluba Introduction to property (T) and sums of squares 24/03/2022 10:00 1016
We will start by looking into Cayley graphs of a group and build some geometric understanding of group Laplacians. Then we will look at their algebraic description in the group rings. This description allows to bridge Kazhdan property (T) and algebraic positivity of a certain operator in the group ring. We will explain how such positivity statements can be reformulated to a sum of squares decomposition problems. These in turn can be relaxed to problems of semidefinite optimization which can be effectively solved a computer. Finally I will say a few words on how such (imprecise) solution could be certified to form a mathematical proof of property (T). The talk will be based on 1312.5431 by N.Ozawa and 1703.09680 by P.Nowak and myself.
+ Marek Kaluba Aut(Fₙ) has property (T) 24/03/2022 14:00 1013
The aim of the lecture is to show that Aut(Fₙ), the automorphism group of the free group has Kazdhan property (T). I will begin by studying the structure of Aut(Fₙ) and the action of its "Weyl group". Then I will show you how to square the group Laplacian in a form that is compatible with the action. This description can be then used to define operators Adjₙ and Opₙ and reformulate property (T) in terms of their positivity. Finally I will show to use the Weyl group to reduce property (T) for Aut(Fₙ) for any n ≥ 5 to a sum of squares problem in ℝ[Aut(F₅)] which can be effectively checked on a computer. The talk will be based on 1812.03456 by D.Kielak, P.Nowak and myself.
+ Petr Naryshkin Almost finiteness and classifiability of crossed products 10/03/2022 14:00 1013
It has been a long-standing problem in the classification theory of C*-algebras to find sufficient conditions for a topological dynamical system to give rise to a classifiable crossed product. To address this problem, in 2015 Kerr introduced the notion of almost finiteness and showed that it implies Z-stability of the crossed product which is now known to be the key regularity property in classification. In this talk, we will present some recent results showing that certain classes of systems are almost finite.
+ Maxime Gheysens Mi-libre, mi-direct 03/03/2022 14:00 1013
+ Ping Xu Kontsevich-Duflo type theorem for foliations 17/02/2022 14:00
According to Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem, for a smooth manifold $M$, the Hochschild cohomology of the algebra of smooth functions $C^\infty (M)$ (with values in itself) is naturally isomorphic, via the HKR-map, to the space of polyvector fields on $M$ as Gerstenhaber algebras. In this talk, we will discuss how to extend this theorem to the situation when $M$ is replaced by the leaf space of a foliation. In this case, a correction term--- the square root of the Todd class of the foliation is needed. The talk is based on the joint works with Z. Chen, H.-Y. Liao, M. Stienon and M. Xiang.
+ Vadim Alekseev Geometry of spaces of graphs and sofic approximations 10/02/2022 14:00
One of the fundamental connections between graph theory and group theory goes via the concept of a metric approximation of an infinite group by finite objects (groups or graphs), one important example being the notion of soficity for groups. This naturally leads to numerous results which describe approximation properties of the group (for instance, amenability or Haagerup property) in terms of geometric properties of its approximations (e.g. hyperfiniteness or coarse embeddability in a Hilbert space of a graph sequence). As it turns out, ultimately these results rely on analysis of topological and measure-theoretic properties of the coarse groupoid associated to a sequence of graphs of bounded degree. In this talk, I will describe these connections and some recent results around them.
+ Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace Groupes hyperboliques de type I 27/01/2022 14:00 Sophie Germain
+ Rui Loja Fernandes Obstructions to non-formal deformation quantization 20/01/2022 14:00 Sophie Germain
The Kontsevich formality theorem, established more than 20 years ago, implies that every Poisson manifold has a deformation quantization. The existence of non-formal deformations, on the other hand, remains largely open. We study star products defined by semi-classical integral Fourier operators. Our main result states that a Poisson manifold which admits such a star product must be integrable by a symplectic groupoid. This is on-going joint work with Alejandro Cabrera (U.F.
+ Andrea Vaccaro Equivariant Z-stability of actions of amenable groups on simple nuclear C*-algebras 16/12/2021 14:00 1013
An action of a group G on a C*-algebra A is equivariantly Z-stable if it tensorially absorbs the identity action the Jiang-Su algebra Z. Similarly to the role played by Z-stability in the study of nuclear C*-algebras, equivariant Z-stability is of central importance in the study of actions of amenable, discrete, countable groups on simple, nuclear, separable, Z-stable, unital C*-algebras. It is an open problem whether all such actions are automatically equivariantly Z-stable. In this talk I will introduce and discuss this notion, and I will present a recent result by Gardella, Hirshberg and myself, where we show that every G-action on a C*-algebra A as above is equivariantly Z-stable if the trace space T(A) of A satisfies certain topological and dynamical conditions.
+ Shirly Geffen Pure C*-algebras of stable rank one 02/12/2021 14:00
The Cuntz semigroup has become increasingly important in connection with Elliott’s classification program. Our work further contributes to the evidence that a C*-algebraic dimension type property, so-called stable rank one, is deeply connected to purely algebraic properties of the Cuntz semigroup: almost divisibility and almost unperforation. In particular, we can show that in some cases stable rank one can be recovered from almost divisibility and almost unperforation.

We will introduce the category of coarse spaces. These are spaces with a large-scale geometrical structure. We will explain when these spaces have bounded geometry, and introduce the notion of "geometric property (T)". Then we will show some of its properties, and how it relates to property (T) on topological groups.
+ Daniel Drimbe Superrigidity for dense subgroups of Lie groups and their actions on homogeneous spaces 18/11/2021 14:00 1013 Sophie Germain
In this talk we provide a class of infinite measure preserving actions that are W*-superrigid, i.e. the action can be completely recovered from its crossed product von Neumann algebra. In particular, we show that if $S$ is a set of primes that contains at least two elements, then the action of $PSL_2(\mathbb Z[S^{-1}])$ by fractional transformations on the upper half plane is W*-superrigid. This is a joint work with Stefaan Vaes.

+ Bruno de Mendonça Braga Nonlinear Geometry of Operator Spaces 14/10/2021 14:00 1016 Sophie Germain
A Banach space (X, ||·||) can be viewed as a metric space endowed with the metric d(x,y)=||x-y||. The nonlinear theory of Banach spaces then asks how much of the linear structure of (X,||· ||) can be recovered by looking at X simply as a metric space, i.e., leaving its linear structure aside. Although the nonlinear theory of Banach spaces has been receiving a lot of attention, its noncommutative counterpart (i.e., the nonlinear theory of operator spaces) has been being neglected until very recently. Precisely, in joint works with Alejandro Chávez-Domínguez and Thomas Sinclair, we have introduced some notions of nonlinear maps and embeddability/equivalences between operator spaces which are (1) weak enough so that their existence is strictly weaker than their linear counterparts and (2) strong enough so that they still preserve some of the linear operator structure of the spaces. In this talk, I will give an overview of the current status of the nonlinear theory of operator spaces.
+ Alessandro Vignati Uniform Roe algebras of uniformly locally finite spaces are rigid 23/09/2021 11:00 1016 Sophie Germain
Coarse geometry is the study of metric spaces when one forgets about the small scale structure and focuses only on large scales. Objects and maps of interest are coarse spaces and coarse equivalences. Typical examples important for applications are finitely generated groups with word metrics, and discretisations of non-discrete spaces such as Riemannian manifolds. To a coarse space one associates, after Roe, several C*-algebras capable of detecting algebraically the geometric properties of the space. Chief among these, for applications, is the uniform Roe algebra of X, C_u*(X). We show that if X and Y are uniformly locally finite spaces whose uniform Roe algebras are isomorphic, then X and Y are coarsely equivalent. This is joint work with Baudier, Braga, Farah, Khukhro and Willett.
+ Xin Li Generalizations of Thompson's group V arising from left-cancellative small categories 20/05/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
Thompson's group V is a by now classical example of an infinite simple group. The construction has been generalized in many ways. In this context, the notion of topological full groups of groupoids has attracted attention because it produces new examples of infinite simple groups with interesting properties. My talk will discuss topological full groups arising from left-cancellative monoids and small categories. I will present several concrete examples, explain the connection to operator algebras, and focus on homological properties of these topological full groups.
+ Clément Dell'Aiera Dynamic asymptotic dimension and homology 06/05/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw/
Groupoid homology has attracted increasing attention from the topological dynamics and operator algebras communities following the work of Matui. Matui's HK conjecture predicts that the K-theory groups of the reduced C*-algebra of a minimal essentially principal ample groupoid coincides with its homology groups. We prove that homology of principal ample groupoids vanishes in degree above its dynamical asymptotic dimension, a notion of dimension from topological dynamics. We deduce several consequences: Matui's HK conjecture holds for low dimensional principal ample groupoids, and classification of their reduced C*-algebra. (Joint work with Christian Bonicke, Jamie Gabe and Rufus Willett)
+ Michal Doucha Large scale geometry of Banach-Lie groups 29/04/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw/
I will present a way how to study (connected) Banach-Lie groups from the point of view of large scale geometry. The original idea comes from C*-algebra theory; namely, we got inspired by Ringrose'notion of `C*-exponential length' for unitary groups of C*-algebras, thoroughly studied in the previous decades by Lin, Phillips, and others. It turns out that the exponential length well-defines a quasi-isometry type of any connected Banach-Lie group (and actually it has good both large scale and small scale properties). After discussing some generalities, I will focus on Banach-Lie examples of groups with properties (T), (FH) and of Haagerup. For the latter, we believe these should be the first non-trivial and non-abelian ones among non-locally compact groups. I will also present some perhaps counter-intuitive non-examples: while for n>2 and any unital commutative Banach algebra A, SL(n,A) always has property (T), SL(2,A) doesn't have the Haagerup property if A is an infinite-dimensional separable unital commutative C*-algebra. It is joint work with Hiroshi Ando and Yasumichi Matsuzawa.
+ Tim de Laat Gelfand pairs, spherical functions and exotic group C*-algebras 22/04/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
For a non-amenable group G, there can be many group C*-algebras that lie naturally between the universal and the reduced C*-algebra of G. These are called exotic group C*-algebras. Let G be a simple Lie group or an appropriate locally compact group acting on a tree. I will explain how the L^p-integrability properties of different spherical functions on G (relative to a maximal compact subgroup) can be used to distinguish between different exotic group C*-algebras. This recovers results of Samei and Wiersma. Additionally, I will explain that under certain natural assumptions, the aforementioned exotic group C*-algebras are the only ones coming from G-invariant ideals in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of G. This is based on joint work with Dennis Heinig and Timo Siebenand.
+ Clara Loeh Amenable covers of manifolds 15/04/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
An open cover of a space is amenable if the pi_1-images of the members of the open cover in the ambient space are amenable. I will survey the use of amenable covers of small multiplicity for manifolds and the interaction with invariants such as simplicial volume.
+ Omar Mohsen Dirac operator on singular foliations 18/03/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw

+ Iakovos Androulidakis Singular inhomogeneous operators and their parametrices 11/03/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw/
Given a singular filtration of a manifold, we use singular foliations to define a pseudo-differential calculus. The operators in our calculus have a well defined principal symbol. We distinguish a characteristic set of representations of the associated (singular) grading, on which the invertibility of the principal symbol depends (Rockland condition). We then show that invertibility implies hypoellipticity, by constructing a parametrix. This is joint work with Erik van Erp, Omar Mohsen and Robert Yuncken.
+ Eduardo Scarparo Boundary maps, germs and quasi-regular representations 11/02/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
In recent years, there have been great advances in understanding when the reduced C*-algebra of a discrete group is simple and when it has the unique trace property. A central role in these discoveries has been played by Furstenberg's notion of boundary action (specially the so-called Furstenberg boundary). For quasi-regular representations in general, the situation is much different, with Haagerup and Olesen showing that there is such a representations \pi of Thompson's group V such that C*_\pi(V) is the Cuntz algebra O_2 (hence simple and without traces). In this talk, we will review the notions above, and present applications of boundary actions to the study of invariant random subgroups, traces and C*-simplicity of quasi-regular and Koopman representations. We will be specially interested in representations of Thompson's groups. This is joint work with Mehrdad Kalantar.
+ Roman Sauer Action on Cantor spaces and macroscopic scalar curvature 04/02/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
We prove the macroscopic cousins of three conjectures: 1) a conjectural bound of the simplicial volume of a Riemannian manifold in the presence of a lower scalar curvature bound, 2) the conjecture that rationally essential manifolds do not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, 3) a conjectural bound of l2-Betti numbers of aspherical Riemannian manifolds in the presence of a lower scalar curvature bound. The macroscopic cousin is the statement one obtains by replacing a lower scalar curvature bound by an upper bound on the volumes of $1$-balls in the universal cover. Group actions on Cantor spaces surprisingly play an important role in the proof. The talk is based on joint work with Sabine Braun.
+ Stefaan Vaes Nonsingular Bernoulli actions of arbitrary type 28/01/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
I will survey several recent results on the ergodicity and possible Krieger types of nonsingular Bernoulli actions. Given a countable group G and a base space X, consider the Bernoulli shift action of G on X^G, together with the product measure of a family of probability measures \mu_g on X. Even the basic question of ergodicity of this action turns out to be subtle. I will present general criteria to determine the Krieger type and show that all types, including II_\infty and III_0, can arise from nonsingular Bernoulli actions of amenable groups.
+ Michael Brannan Quantum graphs and quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebras 21/01/2021 16:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
I will give a light introduction to the theory of quantum graphs and some related operator algebraic constructions. Quantum graphs are generalizations of directed graphs within the framework of non-commutative geometry, and they arise naturally in a surprising variety of areas including quantum information theory, representation theory, and in the theory of non-local games. I will review the well-known construction of Cuntz-Krieger C*-algebras from ordinary graphs and explain how one can generalize this construction to the setting of quantum graphs. Time permitting, I will also explain how quantum symmetries of quantum graphs can be used to shed some light on the structure of quantum Cuntz-Krieger algebras. (This is joint work with Kari Eifler, Christian Voigt, and Moritz Weber.)
+ Stuart White Classifying simple nuclear C*-algebras 14/01/2021 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
I’ll discuss the state of the art in the classification of simple nuclear C*-algebras drawing parallels to Connes celebrated results for injective von Neumann algebras.
+ Thomas Vidick MIP* = RE 26/11/2020 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
MIP* and RE are complexity classes, similar but larger to the more well-known P, NP, etc. The equality in the title implies that a natural optimization problem that originates in the study of nonlocality in quantum mechanics is undecidable. Due to prior work by many others this undecidability implies a negative answer to multiple conjectures in quantum information (Tsirelson's problem) and operator algebras (Connes' Embedding Problem (CEP), Kirchberg's QWEP). In the talk I will explain the characterization MIP* = RE and its connection to the study of nonlocality, Tsirelson's problem, and operator algebras. I will give an overview of the proof of MIP* = RE, which involves reducing the Halting Problem to the problem of approximating the supremum of a linear function on certain quantum correlation sets. Based on joint work with Ji, Natarajan, Wright and Yuen available as arXiv:2001.04383.
+ Andrea Vaccaro Rokhlin dimension for actions on Z-stable simple nuclear C*-algebras 19/11/2020 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
Finite Rokhlin dimension is one of the several ways in which the Rokhlin property, a concept originally developed int the framework of amenable actions on von Neumann algebras, has been adapted to C*-dynamics. Actions with finite Rokhlin dimension have many useful features, especially in view of Elliott's classification programme. For instance, finite nuclear dimension and Z-stability are preserved when taking the crossed product of a separable unital C*-algebra by a G-action which has finite Rokhlin dimension, for a wide class of countable discrete amenable groups G. In this talk, I'll discuss the connections of finite Rokhlin dimension with the notion of strong outerness, focusing on equivariantly Z-stable actions of residually finite, amenable, discrete, countable groups on separable, simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with non-empty trace space. In particular, I'll show that for such an action alpha on A, if the action induced by alpha on the trace space of A has small orbits in an appropriate sense, then strongly outerness is equivalent to having finite Rokhlin dimension. The novelty of this result is the absence of topological assumption on the trace space, as opposed to past works proving analogous statements, where the trace space was always assumed to be a Bauer simplex. This is a joint work with Eusebio Gardella and Ilan Hirshberg.
+ Eusebio Gardella The classification problem for free ergodic actions 12/11/2020 14:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw
One of the basic problems in Ergodic Theory is to determine when two measure-preserving actions of a group on the atomless Borel probability space are orbit equivalent. When the group is amenable, classical results of Dye and Ornstein-Weiss show that any two such actions are orbit equivalent. Thus, the question is relevant only in the non-amenable case. In joint work with Martino Lupini, we showed that for every nonamenable countable discrete group, the relations of conjugacy and orbit equivalence of free ergodic actions are not Borel, thereby answering questions of Kechris. This means that there is in general no method, or uniform procedure, that allows us to determine when two actions of a nonamenable group are conjugate/orbit equivalent. It is a non-classification result, which rules out the existence of any classification theorems which use "nice" (Borel) invariants. The statement about conjugacy also solves the nonamenable case of Halmos' conjugacy problem in Ergodic Theory, originally posed in 1956 for ergodic transformations. The main conceptual innovation is the notion of property (T) for triples of groups, for which a cocycle superrigidity theorem à la Popa can be established. In combination with induction methods developed by Epstein, this is used to obtain a large family of free ergodic actions of the given nonamenable group which have pairwise distinct 1-cohomology groups.
+ Gabor Elek Uniform hyperfiniteness 22/10/2020 14:00 2015
Uniform hyperfiniteness is a strong version of hyperfiniteness, which can be defined for both infinite graphs and measured graphs. It turns out that in the case of infinite graphs, uniform hyperfiniteness is equivalent to Property A. This fact leads to a positive answer of a conjecture of Brodzki et. al. about the equivalence of Property A and Uniform Local Amenability. For measured graphs, we have a uniform version of the Connes-Feldman-Weiss Theorem. I will present some proofs and several, hopefully interesting, examples.
+ Kenny De Commer A quantization of Sylvester's law of inertia 08/10/2020 14:00 2015
Sylvester's law of inertia states that two self-adjoint matrices A and B are related as A = X*BX for some invertible complex matrix X if and only if A and B have the same signature (N_+,N_-,N_0), i.e. the same number of positive, negative and zero eigenvalues. In this talk, we will discuss a quantized version of this law: we consider the reflection equation *-algebra (REA), which is a quantization of the *-algebra of polynomial functions on self-adjoint matrices, together with a natural adjoint action by quantum GL(N,C). We then show that to each irreducible bounded *-representation of the REA can be associated an extended signature (N_+,N_-,N_0,[r]) with [r] in R/Z, and we will explain in what way this is a complete invariant of the orbits under the action by quantum GL(N,C). This is part of a work in progress jointly with Stephen Moore.

Invariant point processes on groups are a rich class of p.m.p. actions. In fact, every essentially free p.m.p. action of a nondiscrete lcsc group is isomorphic to a point process. In this talk I will introduce point processes specifically for nonprobabilists, define their cost, and show that every essentially free point process on a group of the form G x Z has cost one.

On évoquera trois différents types d'applications:
1) les nombres de Betti L² de Aut(F_n) et Out(F_n) ne s'annulent pas en degré égal à leur dimension cohomologique virtuelle ;
2) un sous-groupe quelconque du groupe fondamental d'une variété compacte de dimension $3$ a ses nombres de Betti L² nuls en degré 3 ET 2 ;

+ Anush Tserunyan Hyperfinite subequivalence relations of treed equivalence relations 04/06/2020 16:00 https://bigbluebutton3.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-j6k-9fw

A large part of measured group theory studies structural properties of countable groups that hold "on average". This is made precise by studying the orbit equivalence relations induced by free Borel actions of these groups on a standard probability space. In this vein, the amenable groups correspond to hyperfinite equivalence relations, and the free groups to the treeable ones. In joint work with R. Tucker-Drob, we give a detailed analysis of the structure of hyperfinite subequivalence relations of a treed equivalence relation on a standard probability space, deriving the analogues of structural properties of amenable subgroups (copies of \mathbb{Z}) of a free group. Most importantly, just like every such subgroup is contained in a unique maximal one, we show that even in the non-pmp setting, every hyperfinite subequivalence relation is contained in a unique maximal one.

It is a nice exercise in combinatorics to show that all finite 2d-regular graphs are Schreier graphs of the free group on d generators. We will consider the analogous question in the world of Benjamini-Schramm convergence of sparse graphs.
We show that any 2d-regular unimodular random network can be given an invariant random Schreier structure. Equivalently, every 2d-regular graphing is a local isomorphic image of a graphing coming from a probability measure preserving action of the free goup.

+ Konstantin Slutsky Smooth orbit equivalence of free Borel ℝᵈ actions 07/05/2020 14:00 https://bigbluebutton.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-pft-wjq

Smooth Orbit Equivalence (SOE) is an orbit equivalence relation between free ℝᵈ-flows that acts by diffeomorphisms between orbits.  This idea originated in ergodic theory of ℝ-flows under the name of time-change equivalence, where it is closely connected with the concept of Kakutani equivalence of induced transformations.  When viewed from the ergodic theoretical viewpoint, SOE has a rich structure in dimension one, but, as discovered by Rudolph, all ergodic measure-preserving ℝᵈ-flows, d > 1, are SOE.

Miller and Rosendal initiated the study of this concept from the point of view of descriptive set theory, where phase spaces of flows aren't endowed with any measures.  This significantly enlarges the class of potential orbit equivalences, and they proved that all nontrivial free Borel ℝ-flows are SOE.  They posed a question of whether the same remains to be true in dimension d>1.  In this talk, we answer their question in the affirmative, and show that all nontrivial Borel ℝᵈ-flows are SOE.

+ Nicolás Matte Bon Actions of Thompson's group on the real line 23/04/2020 14:00 https://bigbluebutton.imj-prg.fr/b/fra-pft-wjq

Given a group it is a natural problem to understand and classify its actions by homeomorphisms on the real line. In particular it is interesting to understand which such actions are structurally stable, i.e. rigid under small deformations. I will address these questions for Thompson's group F, a finitely presented group which admits a natural action on the real line by piecewise affine homeomorphisms. We will see that this group turns out to admit a vast family of other "exotic" actions,  and I will present a dynamical classification of its actions which allows to deduce some rigidity results.  In particular, I will explain that its "standard" action is structurally stable. A tool in the proof of this result is the study of a certain flow on a compact space constructed by B. Deroin, which encodes all actions of a given group on the real line.
This is part of joint works with J. Brum, J. Carnavale, C. Rivas, M. Triestino.

+ Kristin Courtney Amalgamated Products of RFD C*-algebras 12/03/2020 14:00 2015 Sophie Germain

Residual finite dimensionality is the C*-algebraic analogue for maximal almost periodicity and residual
finiteness for groups. Just as with the analogous group-theoretic properties, there is significant interest in when residual finite
dimensionality is preserved under standard constructions, in particular amalgamated free products. In general, this question is quite difficult; however the answer is completely understood when the amalgamated subalgebra is finite dimensional. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress in understanding amalgamated products of RFD C*-algebras over central subalgebras. The material is based in part on joint work with Tatiana Shulman.

+ Hang Wang Index theory for elliptic operators invertible towards infinity 06/02/2020 14:00 2015 Sophie Germain

An elliptic differential operator on a complete manifold, which is invertible outside a compact set, is Fredholm and also admits a higher index in the K-theory of the $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group. Interesting examples involve manifolds admitting a positive scalar curvature metric outside a compact set and also the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory for manifold with boundary (attaching a cylindrical end). We propose an approach to obtain the APS-type formulas of the Fredholm index and its generalizations for this type of operators, as applications we obtain (equivariant) index formulas for Dirac type operators on manifolds with boundaries and with corners.

+ Raphaël Ponge Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, Microlocal Weyl Law, and Local Index Theorem on Noncommutative Tori 23/01/2020 14:00 2015 Sophie Germain

Noncommutative tori are ubiquitous examples of noncommutative spaces. Following the seminal work of Connes-Tretkoff, Connes-Moscovici, and others a differential geometric apparatus is currently being built. So far the main focus has been on conformal deformation of the (flat) Euclidean metric or product of such metrics. A new challenge is the accounting of the non-triviality of  the modular automorphism group due to the lack of commutativity.

This talk will report on ongoing work to deal with general Riemannian metrics on NC tori (in the sense of Jonathan Rosenberg). After explaining the construction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in this setting, three main results will be presented. The first main result is a topological version of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for NC tori. This extends the Gauss-Bonnet theorem of Connes-Tretkoff for conformally flat metrics. The second result is a microlocal Weyl law for noncommutative tori. This can be seen as a first step toward Quantum Ergocity on NC tori. The third result is a local index formula for NC 2-tori equipped with a (noncommutative) Kaelher structure.

A classical result of Siegel asserts that the (2,3,7)-triangle group attains the smallest covolume among lattices of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. In general, given a semisimple Lie group $G$ over some local field $F$, one may ask which lattices in $G$ attain the smallest covolume. A complete answer to this question seems out of reach at the moment; nevertheless, many steps have been made in the last decades. Inspired by Siegel's result, Lubotzky determined that a lattice of minimal covolume in $\mathrm{SL}_2(F)$ with $F=\mathbb{F}_q((t))$ is given by the so-called characteristic $p$ modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q[1/t])$. He noted that, in contrast with Siegel’s lattice, the quotient by $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q[1/t])$ was not compact, and asked what the typical situation should be: « for a semisimple Lie group over a local field, is a lattice of minimal covolume a cocompact or nonuniform lattice? ».
In the talk, we will review some of the known results, and then discuss the case of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ for $n > 2$. It turns out that, up to automorphism, the unique lattice of minimal covolume in $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ ($n > 2$) is $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, it is not uniform, giving a partial answer to Lubotzky’s question in this case.
+ Michiya Mori Lattice isomorphisms between projection lattices of von Neumann algebras 12/12/2019 14:00 2015 Sophie Germain

What is the general form of lattice isomorphisms between projection lattices of von Neumann algebras? In 1930s, von Neumann gave an answer to this question for type II_1 factors. He proved that a lattice isomorphism can be described by means of a ring isomorphism between the algebras of affiliated operators. However, apparently no answer to this question has been given for the general case (in particular for type III von Neumann algebras) until now. In this talk, I give an answer to this question for general von Neumann algebras (save types I_1 and I_2) using ring isomorphisms between the algebras of locally measurable operators.

+ Yongle Jiang Maximal von Neumann subalgebras arising from maximal subgroups 05/12/2019 14:00 2015 Sophie Germain

In 2003, Ge posted a problem list on von Neumann algebras. Question 2 (consisting of three parts) from this list is about the existence of certain maximal subfactors. In this talk, I will explain solutions to this Question. Central to these solutions is the use of maximal subgroups with infinite index in certain ambient groups. We also observe that for any faithful 4-transitive action of a group $G$ on an infinite set, the stabilizer subgroup of any point generates a maximal von Neumann subalgebra of $L(G)$. Combining with known works on constructing faithful highly transitive actions, this gives us many maximal von Neumann subalgebras arising from maximal subgroups. Part of the talk is based on joint work with Adam Skalski.

X_n = g_n...g_1 x,

I will discuss how to construct a derivation from a quantum Markov semigroup (after Cipriani-Sauvageot). This derivation can be then used to obtain strong solidity results, via Hilbert-Schmidt estimates for certain maps associated with the semigroup. I also plan to describe applications to the Akemann-Ostrand property, which usually rely on nuclearity of certain C*-algebras. New results are obtained for q-Gaussian algebras, but also many known examples are recovered. Joint work with Martijn Caspers and Yusuke Isono.

H = < a,b,c,d | ab=b²a, bc=c²b, cd=d²c, da=a²d >

I will explain how this can be used to construct a continuum of super-expanders comparable with these of Lafforgue and will sketch the proof of a conjecture of Druţu and Nowak that such spaces yield new counterexamples to the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture.

+ Martin Finn-Sell The quantitative Baum—Connes conjecture for some lacunary hyperbolic groups 19/09/2019 14:00

At this point, it’s well known that the Baum—Connes conjecture has various counterexamples to its many forms (the version for groupoids, and the version with coefficient algebras attached and the geometric version). The groups for which the conjecture fails with coefficients are known as “Gromov Monsters”, and they contain expander graphs embedded in their Cayley graphs in some weak metric sense. These groups are produced using probabilistic methods and rely on small cancellation theory to confirm their existence. Many such examples can be made “as hyperbolic as possible” even whilst not being finitely presented -this should be take to mean that they’re direct limits of a sequence of hyperbolic groups that have a strong relationship between the injectivity radius of the connecting maps in the limit diagram and the hyperbolicity of the sequence terms. This class of groups was dubbed “lacunary hyperbolic” by Osin—Ol’Shanskii—Sapir, and is well known to contain a variety of complex and pathological examples of other monster groups. The main aim of the talk is to give an overview of how to use quantitative methods (in the context of K-theory) to prove the classical Baum—Connes conjecture for a specific class of lacunary hyperbolic groups -along the way we’ll give a very brief description of the Baum—Connes conjecture, define lacunary hyperbolicity properly and also discuss the representation theory of such groups in a broader context I’ll poll the audience to see which parts of this they’d most be interested in hearing during the talk.

We study dynamical alternating groups associated to (topologically free, minimal) actions of countable amenable groups on the Cantor set. This is joint work with David Kerr.

+ Sorin Popa Coarse embeddings of R into II₁ factors 20/06/2019 11:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
The hyperfinite II₁ factor R has played a central role in operator algebras ever since Murray and von Neumann introduced it in 1936-1943. It is the smallest II₁ factor, as it can be embedded in multiple ways in any other II1₁ factor M, and the unique amenable II₁ factor (Connes 1976). I have shown in 1981 that R can be embedded ergodically into any separable II₁ factor. I will discuss two new results I have obtained, along these lines:
1. Any separable II₁ factor M admits coarse embeddings of R, i.e., an embedding R↪ M such that L²M⊖L²R is a multiple of the coarse Hilbert R-bimodule L²R⊗L²Rᵒᵖ (equivalently, left-right multiplication by R on L²M⊖L²R gives a normal representation of R⊗Rᵒᵖ ).
2. Any separable II∞ factor admits an ergodic embedding of R.

Title: On some problems of holomorphic analytic torsion

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to study the analytic torsion in two different contexts.
In the first context, we study the asymptotics of the analytic torsion, when a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle is twisted by an increasing power of a positive line bundle.
In the second context, we generalise the theory of analytic torsion for surfaces with hyperbolic cusps. Motivated by singularities appearing in complete metrics of constant scalar curvature -1 on stable Riemann surfaces, we suppose that the metric on the surface is smooth outside a finite number points in the neighborhood of which it can have singularities of Poincaré type. We fix a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle which has at worst logarithmic singularities in the neighborhood of the marked points. For these data, by renormalising the trace of the heat operator, we construct the analytic torsion and study its properties.
Then we study the analytic torsion for families of Riemann surfaces. We prove the curvature theorem, which refines Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem on the level of differential forms. We study the behavior of the analytic torsion when the cusps are created by degeneration and we give some applications to the moduli spaces of pointed curves.

+ Mayuko Yamashita A topological approach to signature on manifolds with edges 06/06/2019 11:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
For closed manifolds, signature of the intersection form on cohomology is an important topological invariant. It is expressed as the index of the signature operator, and index theoretical approach has been very successful, for example to understand higher signature invariants.
On stratified pseudomanifolds, we consider the intersection cohomology, and generalizations of signature have been studied by many authors. From index theoretical viewpoint, there has also been works to analyze signature operators on such spaces, and also to construct higher signature index classes in this context.
In this talk, focusing on the case of manifolds with edges satisfying the Witt condition, I will explain my ongoing work to give a topological approach to understand the indices of such operators.
I will give a special class of perturbations of signature operators on such spaces, and show that the index invariants gained from it coincides with the known signature invariants. Further I will explain how this new definition avoids analytic
difficulties with usual signature operators on singular spaces.
+ João Nuno Mestre Transverse measures and densities for Lie groupoids 16/05/2019 14:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
We explain how extending Haefliger's approach to transverse measures for foliations to general Lie groupoids allows us to define and study measures and geometric measures (densities) on differentiable stacks.
The abstract theory works for any differentiable stack, but it becomes very concrete for those presented by proper Lie groupoids - for example, when computing the volume associated with a density, we recover the explicit formulas that are taken as definition by Weinstein.

This talk is based on joint work with Marius Crainic.
+ Luiz Gustavo Cordeiro Sectional algebras of semigroupoid bundles 09/05/2019 14:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
Semigroupoids (also called semicategories) provide a natural language that unifies the theories of groupoids and inverse semigroups, and appear naturally associated to fibred spaces. In this talk we will define algebraic bundles over topological semigroupoids and the associated (graded) sectional algebras, in a manner similar to that of a sectional algebra of a Fell bundle. Several well-known constructions may be regarded as particular cases of this construction. We then prove generalizations of recent results which have been obtained e.g. in the study of Steinberg algebras. Namely, we relate semidirect products of semigroupoids and crossed products algebras; skew products of graded (semi)groupoids and smash products of algebras; direct products of semigroupoids and tensor products; and quotient semigroupoids and quotient algebras. I will finish the presentation with a few natural open questions.

+ Nicolás Matte-Bon Orderable groups arising from Cantor dynamical systems 04/04/2019 14:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
To every homeomorphism of the Cantor set, we associate a group of homeomorphisms of the real line. It is defined by an action on the mapping torus of the dynamical system which preserve each orbit of the suspension flow. I will explain how this produces a class of finitely generated simple groups of homeomorphisms of the real line, and investigate further properties of this construction.

+ Vito Felice Zenobi Higher $\rho$ numbers 28/03/2019 14:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
+ Karsten Bohlen K-homology and index theory on Lie manifolds 21/03/2019 14:00 Salle 2015, bâtiment Sophie Germain
I consider so-called Lie manifolds, which can be viewed as an axiomatization of numerous different types of compactifications of complete non-compact manifolds with bounded geometry and prescribed behavior "at infinity". On such manifolds there is a pseudodifferential calculus and one can consider fully elliptic operators which give rise to Fredholm operators on appropriate Sobolev spaces. A problem, proposed by Victor Nistor, asks for a general index formula of Atiyah-Singer type, valid for Fredholm pseudodifferential operators contained in the Lie calculus. In this talk, which is based on joint work with Jean-Marie Lescure, I present a solution to the problem.

+ Lachlan MacDonald The Godbillon-Vey invariant in equivariant KK-theory 15/11/2018 14:30 Sophie Germain - Salle 2015
The Godbillon-Vey invariant is a de Rham cohomology class associated to any transversely orientable foliated manifold, which can be explicitly constructed at the level of differential forms. Using Hopf cyclic theory, Connes and Moscovici have given in codimension 1 an explicit formula for the Godbillon-Vey invariant as a cyclic cocycle on a convolution algebra associated to the foliation. In this talk I will realise the Connes-Moscovici cocycle as the Chern character of a semifinite spectral triple built using groupoid equivariant KK-theory, and show how the construction generalises to foliations of arbitrary codimension.

+ Sorin Popa On the vanishing cohomology problem for cocycle actions of groups on II_1 factors 21/06/2018 11:00 Sophie Germain - Salle 2015
I will present a result showing that any free cocycle action of a countable amenable group $\Gamma$ on any II$_1$ factor $N$ can be perturbed by inner automorphisms to a genuine action. Besides containing all amenable groups, this \it vanishing cohomology property, called $\Cal V\Cal C$, is also closed to free products with amalgamation over finite groups. While no other examples of $\Cal V\Cal C$-groups are known, by considering special cocycle actions $\Gamma \curvearrowright N$ in the case $N=R$, $N=L(\Bbb F_\infty)$, one can be exclude many groups from being $\Cal V\Cal C$. I will also explain a connection between the vanishing cohomology problem and Connes’ Approximate Embedding conjecture.
+ Alessandro Vignati Who embeds where? 07/06/2018 14:00 Sophie Germain - Salle 2015
If $A$ is a unital separable $C^*$-algebra, $A\otimes\mathcal K$ denotes the stabilization of $A$, and $\mathcal Q(A\otimes\mathcal K)$ its corona algebra. If and $A$ embeds unitally into $M_n(B)$ for some $n$, we can construct an embedding of $\mathcal Q(A\otimes \mathcal K)$ into $\mathcal Q(B\otimes\mathcal K)$. Is this the only case possible? Namely, if $\mathcal Q(A\otimes\mathcal K)$ embeds into $\mathcal Q(B\otimes\mathcal K)$, is it necessary that $A$ embeds into an amplification of $B$? We study this question and see how the answer depend on the set theoretical axioms one assumes.

+ Sara Azzali Kasparov theory with real coefficients and secondary invariants 25/01/2018 14:00 Sophie Germain - Salle 2015
The KK-theory groups with real coefficients can be useful tools to encode certain properties of discrete group actions on C* algebras.
For instance, using the real KK-classes associated to traces on C* algebras, one can rephrase Atiyah’s L2 index theorem for coverings and generalise it to a property of group actions on C*-algebras, which can be called free and properness in K-theory. We will review these constructions and describe related secondary classes.

I will explain how one can develop a dynamical version of some of the theory surrounding the Toms-Winter conjecture for simple separable nuclear C*-algebras. In particular, I will formulate a notion of almost finiteness for group actions on compact spaces which can be seen as an analogue of both hyperfiniteness in the measure-preserving setting and of Z-stability in the C*-algebra setting and is related to dynamical comparison in the same way that Z-stability is related to strict comparison in the Toms-Winter context. For free minimal actions of countably infinite groups on compact metrizable spaces, the property of almost finiteness implies that the crossed product is Z-stable, which leads to new examples of classifiable crossed products.

We construct a notion of quantum surface which enjoys the main nice properties of the smooth version of Connes-Rieffel noncommutative torus. In particular, we give, on a surface of any genus, a family of noncommutative Fréchet algebra structures that closes on the space of smooth functions the surface. The constructed field of Fréchet algebras deforms the commutative one where the space of smooth functions is endowed with the pointwise product. We will discuss also the Hilbert representation theory of those surfaces in connection with the representations of Fuschian arithmetic groups in the discrete series of SL(2,R).

In order to do, I will recall Jones's notion of graph planar algebra and I will show that any subfactor planar subalgebra of the graph planar algebra of a graph with one even vertex arises as the fixed point algebra of an action of a compact quantum group on the algebra of loops of length 2 on the graph.
